HAVOC IN CANTON CITY

The fire at Canton, was confined to portions of the western district, and was extinguished within 24 hours. Less than a twentieth part of the city.-was burned or looted. Many native banks, porcelain and pawnshops, were destroyed, but few homes, and practically no big companies suffered. A conservative estimate of the damage is ten million dollars.
Chen Chiung Ming troops were reported at Shektan, this side of Sheklung. Distant artillery fire was heard in that direction. A detachment of 60 Indian Grenadiers was dispatched' frdm Hong Kong to Shamin as a precautionary measure, / ■;
