SMOKE CONCERT

A smoke concert was held in Dustin's, Cuba street, by the Wellington Mercantile Cricket League on Saturday even™S> }l r' R; J'- Thompson presiding. Ihe Mayor (Mr. R. A. Wright) was present, with Mr., J. Hutchings, representing, the -Wellington Cricket Association. A splendid programme was onjoyed by about sixty guests. The chairman, in -welcoming the guests, said that the league was endeavouring to provide for those -who could only take part in one-day matches, and its object was to assist the. Wellington Cricket Association in furthering tho game. He was pleased to welcome the Mayor and Mr. J. Hutchings. The league was making great progress, and was pleased (o extend its membership. There ■•were now sixteen clubs, or one- hundred and seventy-six players, taking part in tho competition each Saturday.' The Wellington Qity Council was doing its best to provide grounds for all sports, but tho task was growing more difficult every season. It was hoped to arrange a -representative game with .a senior B team some time this season. ' Mr. Hutchings, in responding to the toast "Kindred Associations," said the Wellington Cricket Association appreciated what was being done by leagues such as the Mercantile1, and they would assist tho league in. any way which would be of- benefit to the game. They realised that a. number of players who enjoyed v game were not free every Saturday," and that the Wellington Mercantile and the tradesleagues were doing their-, best for the good of the game.
