HASTINGS, Ist October.
At Hastings yesterday Crown Coin won the Tomoana Hurdles very easily. He was in an awkward place six furlongs from home, but then went up to Toa Taua and stayed on too well for the latter. The climatic conditions were all in favour bf Toa Taua, but the last furlong found him out.
Merry Bells made up a good deal of ground over the middle half-mile of the Tomoana Hurdles, but could not muster up a finishing run from the last fence. Woden will be all the better for his race in the Tomoana Hurdles, while Soliel dOr should win a hurdle race soon, but in, not over-select company. Tutankhamen, with B- Eeed in the saddle, made no race of the Trial Stakes. He began smartly, and was never headed, although he had to be shaken up once in the straight. Martona might have extended the winner of the Trial. Stakes if he had received a clear run in the straight. He was hampered by Hiwinui until it was almost too late. Martona is a big three-year-old ■ gelding, by Scandalmonger fr.om Pastora.
Zaza, a three-year-old gelding by Lliad's Hero from Lady Delaval, showed a good deal of speed in the Trial Stakes, but he ran very wide at the turn. A feature of Mount Marta's victory in the Guineas was that it was his first win. It is unusual to find a maiden winning a three-year-old classic race. Under these circumstancea his double figure dividend was not surprising. Mount Marta is a bay gelding, by Mountain Knight from Marta. He was set to give Lady Joyce 51b in the Guineas, yet was in receipt of 301b from her when she defeated him in the County Handicap at Napier last Saturday. Subjection was the unlucky horse of the- race.. R. Reed was disappointed in trying to get through oh the rails at the turn, and then, after having come on the outside, Subjection became unbalanced about 100 yards from the post. Straightened up again, he was catching both Mount Marta and Lady Joyce at the finish. There is no doubt that he will prove the best stayer of yesterday. Lady Joyce was being ridden hard from the turn, in an effort to head Mount Marta in the Guineas, but although she responded gamely, she was not good enough.
Lady Rewa, after suffering some interference at the start of the Guineas, afterwards had every chance, and was beaten on her merits.
Tanadees was severely tested in the S?" 11! Handicap, but he came through with flying colours. He was hard pressed by Merry Singer all the way up the straight, but responded well to the calls of his rider. Ho will not lose any of his New Zealand Cup admirers, but his owner might have designs on the Derby at Riccarton and pass over the big handicap. The performance of Tanadees was much better than any of the three-year-olds in - tho Guineas, with tha possible exception of Subjection. Merry Singer ran a very solid race in the Spring Handicap, but found ono just too good in Tanadees. Festivity ran from last to third place between the five and three furlongs posts, and, although he finished well, could not quito reach the pair in front of him. Kalakaua received an interrupted passago until well in line for homo in the Spring Handicap, and then ho finished very fast. He is not a small boy's mount, and should develop into a very useful horso, but requires strong handling. The stock of Absurd filled the places in tho Nursery Handicap. Shirley, a powerful filly from Hoy, the dam of Anomaly^ lay in a handy position to tho turn, where she camo through and went on to win easily. Standard (from Peroneal) and Taradiddle (from Marty) showed pace and wore in front most of tho way, but wero not as good as tho winner.
Tiega, who won at Napier, did not receive the best of passages, but was showing up well at the finish. His stablemate, Runnymede, also was slow to jump away.. This son of King John and Tressida is a bold galloper, who will do well later on.
Haiti, a black gelding by Lucullus from Suratura, who was making his first, public appearance, in the Nursery Handicap, finished with a rattle. He should not be long in opening his winning account.
Gaze, who has been racing most consistently, won tho Glenaray Handicap through sheer merit. He was not well placed at any stage, and had to fight his way through in the straight to win by a narrow margin. Kilceit and Master Black were always well placed in the Glenaray Handicap. Master Black may have been hampered very slightly in the straight, but on the day he could not havo beaten Gaze. Ho is racing much better in firm going than ho did at some of the recent meetings.
Comical was stopped badly in the straight in the Glenaray Handicap, but even with tho best of runs it is very unlikely llhat he would have beaten either Gaze or Kilceit, but possibly he would have finished third.
Martona, produced again in the Flaxmere Handicap, ran a good race, but was fairly beaten by Stymie. The latter, a speedy four-year-old filly by Sarto from Waiohiki, made all her own running, and then had enough in reserve to stall off Martona.
Bonnie Gold and Sweet Heather, the favourites _in the Flaxmere Handicap, failed to jump away cleanly, and wore nover prominent.
Purseproud seemed to be well beaten on his merits in the Flaxmere Handicap. Later on when this angular son of Polydamon and Pursefiller has been built up again, he should show up well. Wassail was fairly defeated in the Flying Handicap. He did not look half lis well as when he racod at Riccartou. but was backed with confidence by somebody. He was well beaten a furlong from home, being under pressure and unable to rcspund.
First Salute, who looked very well beroro the Flying Handicap, scored a very easy victory. He seemed to be back almost to his best form, and, providing he can bo kept sound, should win some good races.
Avonlea finished surprisingly well in the Flying Handicap, and should he kenl ill mind for the Master ton Meeting. She was many lengths to the bad at one stage of the race.
My, Bug Webster has .teught the wcuigrag Sitter* from M.e?»au P^'tvii
Till, and- the bay gelding is now in work in Otaki. He is looking welT~ Mr. Webster has a string of 6even horses in all.
The Otaki Maori Racing Club suffered a small loss as the result of their recent race meeting.
