WALLACE STREET AND THORNDON QUAY

It would appear that the running ol cars to Adolaid© road, via the WallaceJohn street extension, is still a good many weeks ahead, for the constructing of the big concreto retaining walls on either side of the lowered road level, has still a long way to go. These retaining walls make up between them the biggest job of its kind so far undertaken in Wellington, and it may bo five or six weeks if present progress is maintained, before they are completed, after which tram track work and road surfacing will follow on for a few more weeks. The heavy rain last week brought down a fairly awkward slip, which threatened to run back some distance irito privato property, but it was tackled at once and remedied. The wall in this length has been in position for a few days only, but the slip did it no damage • T^ n um ack work is still e°inS ahead in lhorndon quay and has now reached a point well on the Lambtori side of Davis street. The work is necessarily slower than straight-out renewal or new track work, for the reason that the crown of thu road is being reduced by ten inches or so in order to render it more safe for horse-drawn traffic when paved with bitumen. A fair amount of preparation work at the far end of the quay has now been done, and a start with the paving of this length will bo made early next week. In the meantime the paving cam* is busy with the surfacing of the Pipitea wharf, and hns already covered a, bi" area at the seaward end. The work will be _ completed in conjunction with the paving of Thorndon quay, within the shed m wet weather, on the wharf when paving catches up on the road preparation work.

The second paving plant should arrive witlun a week, and will at once be assembled on the site among the sandhills at Lyall Bay East.
