STREET NAMES

TO/THE EDITOR.

Sir, —Whilst the question of street nomenclature is being discussed, may I point out how obvious it is that in . the pa6t this subject has been, allowed to develop in a. most haphazard fashion, for we see the names of some great men attached to some very insignificant lanes and streets, many have also been1 supplied with almost unpronounceable and incongruous names. The inclusion of the suburban districts has revealed many cases of duplication, and new names for new streets have been accepted with scant consideration, and little regard for euphonism or a general sense of the fitness of things. Your leaderette yesterday rightly • suggested that the City Council should not treat j the question lightly, and there is little doubt but that a good name may improve a locality, or a bad one may discredit it. Who can think of such a name as "Stinkhouse Bridge" with pride, which name still exists as a memory of my boyhood days in London, although I expect it has been improved by_ this time. Now that some of our citizens are showing signs of a slight awakening interest in the beautification of theii- localities by tree planting, provision of childrens' playgrounds, etc.. our council should give every encouragement to any movement which is for the betterment of the city. We appear to have tried national names, Maori names, names of public men, names of nvers, and extinct volcanoes, so why ■not give the new streets of the city a i little tone up in the horticultural line, by adopting some floral names, such ai P"mrof' Pansy, cyclamen, boronia, daffodil, barberry, iris, carnation, -oetunia clematis, crocus, and so on, ad lib"----i Jim, etc., mth <s ♦ v JOHN CASTLE. I <iotli September.
