MR. ISITT'S POSITION

The vice-president of the Christchurch Chamber of Commerce, Mr'. W. Machin, was' reported in yesterday's "Post" as suggesting that Mr.-L. M. Isitt (Christchurch A 1 orth) should resign his seat to allow himself to be triumphantly returned free from any promise to support the Government in the' event of Cabinent not agreeing to electrify the Lyttelton tunnel. Mr. ■ Isitt has had four such invitations to resign and make the by-election a test of local opinion on i: subjects of importance; to Christchurch, but he. is not- disposed-to accept these interesting political ventures "To begnv with," said Mr..lsitt, when asked tor his opinion on the latest invitation, j. have already expressed my intention of not standing again for the House, and I certainly have no desire to start a new career as aii independent member. Ihe impossibility of my agreeing ■1-3 the suggestion will be mainfest if the nature of my pledge is rememberl A P^Sed myself to my constituents that 1 would do my best to prevent tne present Government being displaced by a Liberal-cum-extreme Labour majority. If that .pledge had been qualified by a provision that I would resign and so precipitate a dissolution -iri order to compass- some local scheme I •should at all events be free to take action as suggested without breaking my word, but I think on' reflection that the maker of the suggestion will recognise that the action he suggests would involve a distinct breach of honour on my part.
