A deputation representing churches, patriotic associations,'land women's organisations asked the Chief Secretary, Mr. Oakes, to legislate for a stricter oil-.' servation of Anzac Day, to place it on the same footing as Good Friday and Christmas Day, by closing hotels and prohibiting races. It was complained that under existing conditions the day was desecrated and jnade a day of pleasure and excess,.instead of sacred memories, and was marked by wholesale drinking and unlimited sport. ! Mr. Oakes said the Government'intended to act along the lines suggested, including the issue of a proclamation forbidding the opening of hotels and the holding of race meetings.
