THE CITY'S TRIBUTE

MEMORIAL COMMITTEE MEETS.

A meeting of the Wellington Citizens' War Memorial Committee was held last evening, Mr. J. P.-Firth presiding, when reports of the progress of tho collecting campaign were received and discussed. It was stated that the organisation for the block canvass of the city had practically been completed, although volunteers were still required for certain unallotted blocks. Collecting was proceeding, but reports had not yet come in. As a result oE the publicity given to the campaign, over £600 had been received in direct donations since the fund was reopened. A deputation from Brooklyn pointod out that in. addition to the outlay for their own memorial, 75 per cent, of which had been collected in the district, the residents had had a series of heavy calls upon their genorosity, and at tho present time were being canvassed for certain local enterprises. Under the circumstances, they said, it would be hopeless to look for any assistance from Brooklyn in the meantime. Although the deputation was not prepared to pledge the district in the matter of assistance liilor on iv (ho campaign, it undertook to bring the subject before tho residents and sco what could be done. The Brooklyn people were thoroughly sympathetic in the matter, but it was. a case of being: "bled white" at present. The deputation was thanked for its attendance.

Time is passing quickly. From 10-mor-row, 11th Septeuibor, there will remain exactly two calendar months in which to collect the last £10,000 of the £25,000 required for Uio city's war memorial. Donations may be sent direct to "tho sucreturv. Wellington Citizens' W :ir t\li--iiioriiil CoVumiUvp, Bf A IW. Q.V.0., Wot. llUglWUi ""
