RANFURLY SHIELD
POVERTY BAY ASPIRATIONS """ BADLY SMASHED.
NAPIER, 22nd June.
Hawke's Bay defeated Poverty Bjy in a Ranfurly Shield match yesterday by 46 points to 10, which equals Auckland's record score for representative matches of 48 points to 12. The visitors in the early stages of the game played well, and held their own, but once the defenders got going the challengers were completely outclassed. The ground was very heavy. For the first twenty minutes of the game play was interesting, very even, and of the mixed variety, all classes of forward and back movements being indulged in with remarkably pleasing effect. The visitors took a very full share of aggressive work, and were equally clever in defence. Eventually the defenders of the Shield made a vigorous onslaught, and following a determined loose advance by the forwards Or-mond found a. passage across the line. b'roni this stage Hawke's Bay had tlie advantage. There was not, however, aii absence of good efforts by the visiting hacks, but tfie borne backs quickly turned defence into attack. Tho first spell ended with the scorn 13 points to nil in favour of llawkes Bay. Tries wore scored by Ormund and Greuside, both of which were converted by Nepia, who, in addition, kicked a penalty goal. In the second spell tries were scored by Grenside (3), 0. Brownlie (2), M'Nab (2), Fahvasser, and Kivcll. Mill converted two of the tries, and Irvine one. Two well-earned tries were scored for Poverty Bay by Whaitiri and Scott, both of which were converted by Tureia.
