DIAMONDS AND INSTITUTE DRAW
Without the services of Guest, one of the biggest propositions in their defence, Diamonds had to content themselves with a draw in their match against Institute on No. 2 ground at Association Park. As a matter of fact, Diamonds were fortunate- to leave the field with one point to their credit, for Institute' had much the best of matters,, and had their 'forwards known a little more "about, the science of shooting victory would have gone to the younger eleven. As in the gains on jN?o.° 1 ground, there was no scoring in the first spell, which consisted mainly of up-and-down play, with very little to interest •spectators. There was much wild shooting, tlie ball going anywhere "but near the goal, and neither team made any L,reat attempt at combined play. There was an improvement in the second spell, l-ut even then play did not reach Mie standard expected in a senior fixture. Institute were the first to score, and to J. Smith, right wing, must go the c.-edit of having obtained one of the most remarkable goals of the season. lie shot almost from the corner flag, and to the surprise of onlookers the ball found the net, completely baffling .Waller, the Diamond custodian. Smith, ■it would appear, waa as surprised as anybody else, bub at all events it was a remarkable goal, one that is rarely seen in Wellington. Diamonds were not long in. retaliating. .Prom a good v.siy out Anlcl had a shot, and Burt while stopping the progress of ohe leather, was unable to "clear before Bidgood rushed up and added the nnialiin? touches. There was little of interest in. the concluding stages of the match, and neither side was able to make much impression on tho defence of the other The game ended with the scores level— 1 all.
