BATTLE OF GIANTS
DEMOCRATIC CONVENTION POSSIBLE CANDIDATES NEXT WEEK'S GREAT MEETING. (UNITED PRESS ASSOCIATION.—CQPYHIGHT.) (AUSTRALIAN-NEW ZEALAND CABLE ASSOCIATION.) NEW YORK, 17th June. The Democratic Convention, which js a week away, promises to offer a veritable battle between the political giants of the party, a state of affairs wlu'eh t obviously did not exist at Cleveland, where President Coolidge's influence was omnipotent. The aspirants for the Democratic Presidential honour are in the following order of importance :—Mr. M'Adoo, Mr. Smith, Senator Ralston. Senator Underwood, Mr. Davis (former Ambassador in Britain), Senator Class, Governor Silzer, of New Jersey, l\lr. Cox (former Governor of Ohio), Mr. Marshall (former Vice-President), Mr. Homer, Mr. Cummings (temporary chairman of the Democratic Convention in 1920), and Mr. Vance M'Cormick (manager of Mr. Wilson's 1916 campaign). It would not be surprising, however, if a practically unknown figure rose triumphant as a compromise candidate, after a prolonged conflict among the major aspirants. This is especially likely because a two-thirds majority of the delegates is required for a choice. The M'Adoo forces are determined to institute a simple majority practice, but are not likely to succeed. The party leaders are making strenuous efforts to avoid a schism, in the convention leading to a lasting breach between the factions, for perfervid enthusiasms are expected to reign and deep differences of opinion are already being shown.
