The twenty-five years' dispute between the late Empress Eugenic and the French Government has been settled.- The Empress, in 1889, was awarded 2,287,000' francs from the Imperial Civil List, but the money was not paid, and was now' due .to the. Empress's heiress, Princess Marie, the twelve-year-old daughter of Prince Victor Napoleon. As the death duties ,^and transfer fees amount to 4^ million francs, Princess Maiie'has waived all claims, provided the State gives her the Emperor Napoleon's sword' and. clock, which were the property of Qneen Hortense of Holland. ... \
The Empress Eugenic, .wife 6f NapoJeon 111., Emperor of France, died on 11th July, 1920, at Madrid, while on a visit to .her nephew, the Duke of Alva. On the collapse of the French Empire in 1871 she fled to England and settled with the Emperor and her son at Chis'leliurst, and , after the Emperor's death she removed to Farnborough. ' Her only son, the Prince Imperial, was lulled during the Zulu War of 1879, when Eerying in a British regiment. Queen Hortense of Holland was ■ the step-daughter of Napoleon 1., being a daughter of the Empress Josephine by her first marriage with the Vicomte de Beauharnais. Prince Victor Napoleon is the present head of the family. He was expelled from France in 1886, and now resides in Brussels, with occasional visits to Farnborough. He was married in 1910 to Princess Clementine of Belgium, and! they have one son and one daughter.-
