THE TURF

NOTES AND COMMENTS

(BY " SIR USCEM>T.")

\ Anxious Moments and Scion are the only North Island horses entered at the Dunedin Winter Meeting.

The Auckland horses Miss Melva and Explorer have been entered for the jumping races at the A.J.C. Winter Meeting.

It was 'rather unfortunate for -Mr. Gaine> Carrington that he lost the first money in the Ohifci Handicap .at Hastings through his horse interfering with Battle Knight.. W. Bagby; who was ordered to stand down for a month, has been on the official carpet several times this season. '• The penalty is a light j one, because the flat race season : has ! closed." .-.-.. ■;' , •.'.-■ . j Stage Queen (Comedy King—lndian Queen) won the sprint event at the Onkaparinga Meeting, and; ran the .five furlongs in 59^sec —a course record. She won the same race two years ago. Indian Queen .is : also the dam ■of ■ King Billy, Aborigine, and Maori King^ who j is siring a few winners- on the other side. ,'■'■ ,'.- ■- ' - ./ -... I At the ,Wesb Australian Turf Club's Easter Meeting Ferastein (Feramorz — Steinhall) was successful in ,the River Handicap, nine furlongs. • In connection .with the Winter Meeting of the Otaki Maori Racing Club, to be held on 3rd and 4tlv June, ownex-s and trainers are/reminded that nominations close at[ 8 o'clock on Friday next. The Otaki telegraph office closes at 5 o'clock. Tho City'and Suburban Handicap winner, Ulula, has not met with much success during his career'on the Turf, which commenced in Ireland in 1919. -'■: As a three-year-old he dead-heated ■ for; first in the. Waterford Three-year-old Handicap at The : Curragh, and the Carickmines Handicap, at Newbury. In his next season he won'once at The Curragh,.-! this being in the Kildare Plate, run over a mile and a quarter, while as a five-! year-old he failed, to notch a bracket. Last season he was ■ successful in the Water Orton Plate, at ' Birmingham, whi,le still racing. in the colours of his breeder, .Mr. A. : M'Cann.' "■ He subsequently . passed into the hands of .his present owner/ for whom he registered several placed-' performances in minor races. Verdict's performances hardly need recapitulating, her victory over the French cold"Epinard in last year's Cambridgeshire Handicap being still fresh m memory. Greek^Bachelor raced twice unsuccessfully as a two-year-old, but last year^as a three-year-old he put up some good performances. He won the Tudor Stakes at Sandown and the Cleveland ■ Stakes over the straight mile at .poncaster; and r in his:four other ,attempts registered two thirds, these being in the Irish. Derby, won by Yaygood, and in the Wood Ditton Stakes at Newmarket.

- Mr. -:W. M'Conkey- has recently added to his collection . of: Turf 'celebrities a photograph'reproduction of the late Mrr Sam ; Powell, who. is . regarded by those who/witnessed his work as the prince of starters' in, the .Dominion. ..This statement ismade with all due/respect to such capable officials as-the late Mr. Harry Piper;, and Mr. ; C. O'Connor. In the plioto Mr.--Powell is mounted on Don Juan;—winner, of; the principal-;' event, known' as- the; Waimea South .Steeplechase Cup, a >veight-for-age race. Roddy M'lvor, the best, cross-country hbnse man of :the time -(1876), was second on Sea King. .-.He was also on'the Eecoiid horse in the Hurdle Race, a weight-for-age .race, won'by Moose, ridden by-his owner, Mr..- F.. R. Rivers. ' Don Juan and Moose went on to Canterbury, and competed at the Grand National Meeting that year," both-being ridden by M'lvor. • Moose won the Maiden Plate, beating Mr. Seabright's Zetland (who won the Consolation) and a big field. In the first Grand National Don Juan ran third to Royalty, ridden by-';Mr. Martelli,v who was afterwards killed in a race, and the grey Mousetrap. The photograph is a present from Mr. John Hageh, one of tho oldest' officials of the Nelson. Jockey Club, who was present at the Waimea West Meeting. In those days Mr. Powell trained at Brightwater, and later on took up his residence at Wanganui, where, he made a name as a starter.' :

-Rather a good suggestion/ ana one worth the consideration' of 'the compiler ■of the "Turf Register," - comes from Hastings. '■■ It is that, when the complete volume for the 'racing year comes to be. issued, it should be made to include the details of the C.J.U. Grand National Meeting,' if: only in the form of an appendix, or even merely a loose; leaf. Although technically this meeting belongs to the next racing year, the; public really regard it as the final important'fixture of the coming winter season,- and its absence from the year, s record creates a great deal of disappointment, especially when the jumping months come round againand consultation of .past performances is .desired. ' . .'; ■

( J. Barry, who is running M.'.-M'Car-' ten close for. the winning jockey pre- | miership will ride the members of C. | Pntchard's.team that race at Blenheim. &cl 0" wllV b. e ridden in the principal | race at Blenheim by C. Smith, the Wairj.arapa apprentice, who will claim 51b allowance. This .will reduce the top-' weight s.poundage to 8.9. .Scion has. been entered at Dunedin, and is to make j the trip South, .it his owner considers. j the weight satisfactory. Zero Hour and Rene Mavis, who are engaged at Nejson, are now being -train-" r ed.,,- by-'A,-Goodman, at Richmond "and will -probably, make the trip by motori lorry -Dreamalion did the return journey from Blenheim to Nelson, and Lady Fingers came over from Opaki to Trent.Mr H. Blake, caretaker of the Tau-heremkau-racecourse,- made the trip to town on Saturday to see the" Fleet He informed the writer .that the nest item on the programme of improvements at Taiiberemkau was the erection :of con-' .arete,.entrance ; . gates to - commemorate the jubilee of the Wairarapa Club fp P Sr^t,5 to rs Pi ia smcethe Wan-arapa Meeting, and is making- satisfactory recovery.
