THE LAND TAX

EX-OFFICIAL'S OPINION.

(BX TELEGRAPH PKESS ASSOCIATION.)

DUNEDIN, This Day. The Taxation Commission resumed to-day. Mr. Arthur Clothier, late of the Taxation Department, stated that the provision of the Act so far as land tax was concerned, was cumbersome and intricate. He believed that a straight-out land tax flat rate on both town and country properties would give more satisfaction to the taxpayers. Pie did not, think there would be much objection amongst farmers to pay the small income tax at a flat- rate,, deductions being allowed for mortgage interest. Cases'of failure to make return of income were numerous and flagrant, and he thought that the minimum penalty for such, failure, forty shillings, was insufficient. ■ In respect to company income tax he saw no reason why companies should be placed on a different footing from other firms or individuals. The tax when distributed over a number of shares was very small per share. Ihe Commission has finished, and leaves for Christchurch to-morrow.
