HARBOUR FERRY SERVICE

10 THE MITGE. Sir,—Residents of Eastboiirne are somewhat concerned at the reported decision of the borough authorities to discontinue running the new ferry steamerMuritai during the winter months^ on tho grounds of excessive running cost. Prior to the arrival of the Muritai we all looked forward to a much-improved ferry service and many were induced to build new residences at the bays on this account. Now we find that for the winter months we are to be. deprived of travelling, in comfort, and must crowd on to ths two remaining steamers. Now, Sir, I maintain that the laying up of the Muritai during the winter months, when it will be most appreciated by the residents, is a distinct "breach of faith" on the part of the council. Surely those responsible knew, or should have known, when making the purchase, that the cost of running the Muritai would be greater than either the Duchess or Cobar.- It is reasonable to assume that during the summer months the Muritai more than paid her way, and this fact should to some extent help to balance the position as far as the winter months are concerned. I suggest that those in authority take the ratepayers more if to their confidence, and possibly some means may be devised by which those who "foot the bill" may continue to travel with at least a fair degree of comfort.—l am, RATEPAYER. Bth April. ■

. In regard to "Ratepayer's" grievance, the acting-Mayor (Mr. H. W. Shortt) states .that the Muritai was purchased with the object of obviating a one-boat service during the winter months, a condition of things which has caused a great dealiof inconvenience .to harbour travellers in the.past.- The Ferry Board never intended to' run three boats ex-, cept during the' summer months. The Murit»ii will be placed in commission when the time comes for either the Duchess or the Cobar to undergo an overhaul as is' done each year. Should increased traffic warrant, it the Muritai will be run during the Easter holidays.
