MILK PRICES

■• • .10 THE EDITOR. . j Sir,—A letter appeared in your issue of yesterday over'the signature of the managing director of the "Dairyman,"'in which he suggests that this company receives from the Milk Department Sd, per gallon for added value, and only pays suppliers:' 3id arid 3|d, ' thus implying that we are retaining > l£d per gallon of money belonging to producers. The .facts are as ifollow:—The award price is for milk delivered at the depot. The award, requires the Milk Department to pay 5d per gallon for added value (4d), and. freight .(Id), the producer paying the balance of freight. Wte1 pay the freight, which is l^darid l^d per gallon, according to route, \and to. .simplify accounts, instead ..of.crediting .the full.Sd.. and deducting .'the freight. w ( o 'pay over' the difference.; I think I 1 have said enough .to show that we are not exploit ing the producers, and would ask you,to insert this explanation" in fairness to my company, /which is co-operative. > and exists only for the benefit and protection of .the farmers.—l am, etc.; ' W.F. HAKLEY, •■' ■ - • /-. Secretary,. Wellington Dairy Farmers' Co-op. . . , . .. Association.- •

TO THE EDITOR.

Sir, —In closing the controversy, over the' city milk. prices, owing, to .the apparent difficulty in obtaining, really, correct figures, I would like to .do justice to Mr. Herron, general manager.of the City., Milk Depot. The table supplied by him'was correct, with the exception of a ,couple of decimal variations, but the figures showing the comparative prices between summer and winter milk were .supplied by another official, who mad Vertently made an error of 15 per cent. This was done during Mr. Herron's absence. To the price paid the farmer per quart of winter milk 85 per cent, must be added, thus bringing the pay-, ment to approximately s^d per quart. This milk is retailed at Bid.—l am, etc., , W. G. K. WRIGHT, "Managing Editor, "N.Z. Dairyman.'-
