CIVIL SERVICE COMPETITIONS.

The two swimming events ■ which decided the destination for the season of the Ward Challenge Shield—a shield which is competed for between Civil Services—were held at Xc Aro Baths last evening. 50 Yards Handicap.—First heat: V. Broughton (9sec), 1; C. Fordham (3sec)', 2; T. King (6sec), 3. Time, 34 4-ssnc Thero were ten starters. Inches separated the placed'men. Second heat- J Cowdell (6sec). 1; J. Hill (3sec), 2;' H Little '(osec), 3. Time,' 32 3-ssec. Wo.-! by a touch. Final: Fordham (Native Department), 1; Broughton (P. and T ) 2; Hill (P. and T.), 3; Cowdel) (P and T.), 4. Time,. 29 2-ssec. Won by a foot.

10Q Yards Handicap.—L. R. Davie* (Treasury), 22sec, 1; E. Patterson (Land and Income), scr, 2; C. J. Barrett (Public Health), lOsec, 3; J. Burke (Railway Department), lOsec, 4. Davies won by ten yards. Patterson swam a splendid race. Time, 72 l-ssec.
