FEELING IN AUSTRALIA
AGAINST ABANDONING BASE.
SYDNEY, 31st January. The Federal Ministers state that they have no information, and refuse to comment on the cable reports that the British Government has abandoned- the Singapore Base. Sir John Mbnash considers the abandonment to bo not only a mistake, but a disaster. If would upset the whole schema of Imperial defence, and the project is too serious to be handled by the Government, as the cable reports indicated. The Hon. J. Ley, Minister of Justice, declared the abandonment would be a tragedy to Australia and the Empire. Something must be done,' he said, and Australia must maks it dear that abandonment would mean the,jeopardising of her future. Sir. Charlton, leader pi th* Fjjder^
Opposition, said hs was pleased to hear the news. He was always against the project, and he considered it was made quite unnecessary by the Washington Conference.
