Mr. Arthur Petherick, accompanied by Mrs. Petherick, leaves by the Marama to-morrow for Sydney, where they join the Montoro on a trip to Java, Singapore, Malay States, Siam, and Burmah. ■ , ■

The death occurred on Monday morning at Pahnerston North of Lieutenant J. E: Packman, quartermaster of 6B Area, 6th Regimental district. He was born in England, and for 21 years was attached to the Duke of Wellington'^ West Riding Regiment. He was for some time stationed in India, and took part in the expedition to Lhasa, Tibet, in 1903-4. He took part in the storming of Gyangtse-Jong, and for his servioes was mentioned in dispatches and awarded the D.C.M. He came to New Zealand in 1913 and received an appointment as sergeant instructor, on the New Zealand Staff. He was promoted temporary lieutenant in July, 1915, and temporary captain from April, 1919, to February, 1920. He was stationed at Napier from 1913 to 1915, later went to Palmerston North as . assistant director of supplies and transport and officer-in-charge of the' Army Service Corps, Wellington Military District. v

Mr. Pemberton Billing, formerly member of Parliament for East Terts, arrived in. Wellington from England on Monday. Mr. Billing will be remembered principally in connection with his campaign for a strong air policy during the war. „He took part in the Boer War for three years, and during N the Great War served in the Royal Air Force, retiring with the rank of squadron commander. Mr. Billing has now relinquished politics, and is devoting himself to forwarding a number of patents he has secured.
