OHIRO BENEVOLENT HOME

The Ohiro Benevolent-Home had quito a bright Christmas appearance yesterday. The general dining-hall and the sit-ting-rooms of the inmates were gaily decorated with flowers foliage,' flags, and streamers, the work being carried out by

the members of the staff. To.the women' inmates there were distributed . suitable reminders <5f the festive^ season,; including fancy afternoon aprons, pocket handkerchiefs, neckties, scented soap, e^c. Eachnmn smoker was presented with a briar pipe, tobacco, and pocket handkerchiefs, and nonsmokers all received equivalent gifts of suitable kinds. The dinner was quite sumptuous, consisting of roast lamb with mint sauce, new potatoes, plum pudding, fruit jellies, fruit salad, bananas,-.and ginger ale; In order to provide for the 120 inmates additional quantities of good things had to be arranged for, and* this special provision consisted of 1001b of lamb, 2 sacks of green peas, one sack new potatoes, ten huge iplum puddings, 501b plum' cake, and fruit and other articles iv proportion. In the evening there was an entertainment,' organised by the^taff of assistants, who called in the help of personal friends to supplement the efforts of the inmates themselves, several of whom contributed songs and recitations, including highly original topical compositions. During the evenjng light- refreshments were handed round, including welcome gifts furnished by the students *of the Wellington Girls' College. ■

Santa Claus visited the children at the Salvation Army Home, Owen.street, on Christmas Eve. From a Christmas Tree the children received welcome presents, and they were also given extra dainties at their dinner. Songs and recitations and instrumental^ items were given at an entertainment in the evening. ' ,
