LYALL BAY
The annual "break-up" concert of the Lyall Bay State School last week proved highly successful. The Kilbirnie Hall was packed by-an appreciative audience. The contributions to the programme were:—Chorus, "Hail, Smiling Morn," by the Boys' Choir (repeated by special request); chorus, "The Bells of. St: Michael's Tower,", by senior choir, which also rendered three rounds; two pianoforte duets, Marie Davidson and Betty M'Kenzie; recitations (3) by' Miss Effie Brice; r recitation and logue by Miss S. Neilsori; dance duo, by Misses Edna and Marjory Eaven; dance by Mies Vera Milroy; songs by Misses Frances Knight and Irene Wilson; a comedietta, "The Obstructive Hat," by thirty scholars under tuition by Mrs. O'Sullivan; recitations by Messrs. Lothian, Grono, L. Clay C. Muir, Ray Foster, ■ and Misses Miriel Aitcheson and Irene Wilson; pianoforte solo by Master Denis Ryder, and song by Miss Hitchings, During the interval the chairman (Mr. A. Sando) presented the dux medal for the year (donated by the committee) to Master Bernard French ; a cricket bat (donated by Mr. T. E. 1 K. Burgess)' to Master W. Dustm, and proficiency and competency certificates to scholars, whose names have already been published. In the course of his remarks he~made special acknowledgment of the committee's indebtedness to, and appreciation of the teaching staff, especially referring to the head teacher (Mr. A. C. Blake) and infant mistress (Miss Roberts). He announced the impending departure of Miss V. Reith, who is shortly to be married, and testified to the excellent work she had done in training scholars in singing, training which resulted in the school choir,being runners^up to the winning choirs at the competitions during the last two years.' (The scholars presented Miss Reith with a bouquet, and at the school on Thursday she received a present from the staff of some pieces of. Moorcroft ware.) In 1919 the school annexed the senior tennis championship, in 1922 the senior Rugby championship, in 1923 the senior cricket championship. They also hold tiie M'Whea and Preston Cups, and topped the list for Wellington . this year in swimming certificates. The percentage of passes was higher than ever, moral tone and discipline were excellent, and advancement of scholars rapid. Acknowledgment of assistance given wa3 made. The proceeds of the concert were fo- the school grounds gymnastic appliances fund.
