HUTT HIGH SCHOOL

A very enjoyable ceremony £ook place in the Hutt District High School grounds on Thursday afternoon, the occasion beirr; the.breaking-up'for the holidays. A number of parents were in attendance, also the chairman (Mr. J. Stonehouse) and members of the school, committee. The report submitted by the headmaster (Mr. J. Tamblyn) showed that excellent progress had been made during the year, both in the secondary and primary departments; ' the sports section had also, been well attended to. The'chairman, in the course of his remarks, referred to the retirement of Miss Sinclair, who had been senior teacher of the : secondary j department. He also stated that jthe Education Board had placed on rfScord-'their, appreciation of the services rendered by Miss Sinclair to the board in every position she had filled.

The dux medal was presented to Myrtle Parker. ■; A gold medal, donated by Mr. Odlin, was presented to Walter- Asquith.for being the most improved runner. (, A.cup, which had been donated by Mr. J. Tamblyn, headmaster, was presented by him to the junior cricket team, the winners. Mr. W. J. Melody, who had been in. charge of the tennis section, presented medals to the winners of doubles' and ■ singles matches, and a special medal, donated by Mrs. Melody, was presented to Phylis Babbington by Mrs. Tamblyn. Swimming certificates were also presented. At the close of . the ceremony three hearty cheers were given for the headmaster and staff.

•, At the invitation of Mr. Mason, first assistant, and the scholars of Standard VI., a number of parents, staff and school committee assembled in St. James's schoolroom to spend a social evening. The whole of an excellent programme was given by the pupils, and some fine talent displayed. During the evening the chairman of the school committee took the opportunity of presenting Mrs. Anstis (nee Miss Meagre) with a salad bowl and Miss Sinclair with a rose 'bowl (both teachers had retired from the school), and, in doing so Bpoke invhigh terms of the services rendered by them in service to the school. Master E. Waitai, on behalf of the scholars of Standard- VI., .presented Mr. Mason with a silver ink stand as a token .of loye and esteem from the scholars, who appreciated his untiring zeal during the past year. .During thi evening both scholars and parents expressed their heartiest appreciation of Mr. Mason s self-sacrificing services in the interest of the school during the year. After singing "For He's a Jolly Good Fellow," three cheers were given, and a very, pleasant evening was closed!
