TRADE COMPETITION

HOW IS GERMANY TO BE MET?

Brief comment upon trade competition between New Zealand and overseas countries was made in the annual report of the New Zealand Employers' Federation, presented at the annual meeting to-day. 6 Present-day competition, the report stated, was particularly keen, and there is every reason to believe that it would continue 60 unless Ihere was some furthel' disorganisation of British industry. An approved condition of international, commercial, and political relations in Europe would probably bring competition from additional sources, in particular hoth France and Germany, and would certainly cheapen the cost of British goods by providing wider markets and stimulating mass production. The standard of living was certainly lower in Germany than in Great Britain, and German competition,.which was now beginning to evehtuatej certainly raised the question of, how it was to be met. In this connection, the Government' would, probably have to reconsider the best Weans of. preventing unfair competition from this source. The existence of manufacturing industries in New Zealand, which were not so much the natural result of the development of the country, was threatened, especially in those cases in which the entire elimination of competition during the y/ar brought about a large increase in Vie amount of capital invested in plant and machinery which was now lying idle. .
