WELLINGTON SOUTH CLUB.
The play-off between A. W. Gyles and D. Purchas, who tied for first place in this club's championship tournament, was commenced on Saturday evening, when Mr. Gyles won the first game. He got a strong attack' against the Phili•ov defence, and was able to announce "mate in two" at move 27. • The second game is to be played after Mr. Gyles's return from a business visit to the South Island. The best tables to date in the, club's annual handicap tourney are as follow : G. Greig, 7 wins, 2 losses; G. P. Anderson, 6, 2; H. H. Hart, 3J, U; J E Round, 2i, li; W. Berry; 3, 3; W. B. Clark, 5, 5; and F. Laughton, 2, 2.
