MARANUI SURF CLUB

Mr. J. A. Tripe, president, opened the Maranui Surf and Life-saving Club's season. He wished the club every success in the competitions for which it entered.

lour teams competed for the honour of holding the Queree Cup for one year, and an excellent display was given. The winning team consisted of K. Eversieigh, E. Robson, H. Diaper P D Owen, with E. Hughes (captain). Great interest . was shown in the launching of the surfboat, the first in Aew Zealand, which has been especially made for the club from the specifications of the New South Wales Life-sav-ing Association. ■ Mr. R, Smith, a life-member of the club, originated the idea of a surfboat, and he induced the club to form a: committee to raise the necessary funds.' The Rev. R. H. Catherwood (vice-pre-sident) said there was nothing more manly than self-sacrifice to save life. Football, boxing, and athletics were all manly games, but. life-saving was the best of them all. At his call cheers were accorded Mr. R. Binns, custodian of the beach.

The crew took their position at the launching ropes, and Mrs. J. A. Tripe broke the customary bottle of champagne on the sternpost of the craft, at the same time saying: "I christen you Maranui the First."

The crew consisted of J. Chapman, E. Bobson, S. Hammond, K. Eversleigh, and.E: Hughes (steersman and captain). A surf race for a handsome gold medal (presented by L. Turner) was then raced for over a distance of 300 yards, and was won by K. Eversleigh. Other competitors were: K. Robson, J. Alexander, E. Hughes, S. Kirk, K. Turner, F. Ar^m, and V. Fletcher.. ,'rhe officials for the day were: Director of sports,- Mr. F. Chapman; call steward, Mr. G. Nordstrom; judges, Messrs. R. Binns and E. S. Evans. WELLINGTON CLUB. The Wellington. Amateur Swimming Club held the. second distance (100 yds handicap) for the President's Cup, the results being as follow :— First heat : Edwards (I2sec) 1, Dawkins (12sec) 2, Evans (6sec) 3; time,' 72 sec. Also started : Beasley '>(15sec). Mason (15sec), Corin (15sec), Blakney (12sec), Adam (9sec), Wickens (7sec), and Mollier (6sec). Second heat ; Winstanley (Bsec) 1," Fletcher (6sec) 2, Paterson (scr) 3; time, 68seo. Also started : Russell, jun. (15sec), Prince (14sec), Robinson (14sec), Watson (12sec) and Look (12sec). The final will be decided to-morrow, at 5.30 p.m. The next distance (150 yds).\yill be.decided on Monday, at 5.30 p.m.
