LOWER HUTT COUNCIL

The fortnightly meeting of the Lower Hutt Borough Council was held yesterday. Present: Mr. W. T. Strand (Mayor), Councillors A. M'Bain, W. G. Meldrum, H. G. Teagle, E. W. Hunt, A. F. Roberts, J. Mitchell, L. T. Watkins, A. J. Hobbs, and D. A. Ewen. It was decided to refuse an application for. the council's approval of a proposal to. increase the width of the right-of-way to Messrs. Lowe Bros.' garage to. 14ft in lieu of making a straight right-of-way of 12ft as required by the council. Councillor Roberts considered it inadvisable to grant a permit for a crooked right-of-way, which might become a nuisance in the borough. The Petone and Lower Hutt Gas Lighting Board forwarded debentures for £1585, balance of purchase money in connection with the council's gas undertaking. It was decided to refuse Mr. Anyan a building permit for a building in Tama street which .failed to comply with the bylaw stipulating that all buildings must be 33ft from the centre of the road. The engineer stated that the building had been commenced without a permit. Councillor M'Bain reported that the local band had on two occasions failed ' to apply for a permit to hold a Sunday concert, and also that the programmes for these concerts had not been submitted for approval. The Town Clerk was instructed to inform the band that the council's regulations must be strictly adhered to, and that in future the proprietors of the hall would be instructed to refuse the use of the hall unless a permit were produced. The offer of the Lands Department to hand Over to the council two sections of land above the "Wattle track" was accepted, provided the council was not called upon to accept liability for. an adjoining right-of-way. The engineer reported that the Lowry Bay road now required only three days' work after the next soaking rain. The main road was keeping in fair order, but required heavy rain so that the grader and roller could be put over it. The drain required by Mr. Dyke would cost about £85. The council decided to do this work provided Mr. Dyke paid the cost. . . The offer of Mr.F. Cooper to plant with Flanders poppies a two feet strip round the cenotaph was accepted with thanks.
