The American Charge d Affaites has addressed a Note to Waichiaop protesting against the failure of the authorities to protect missionaries in the in^ terior, and asking the Government to communicate with provincial authorities, and requesting that) every possible meag; ure be taken to secure Dr. Schmalzried's release, and also to protect other missionaries in Tungjen.
