PARTY POLITICS
EARLY ELECTION NO GOOD
MR. L. M. ISITT'S VIEW.
_ Some very candid remarks concerning the political position were made by Mr. L. M. Isitt, Liberal member for Christchurch North, in the course of an interview with ah Ashburton "Guardian" reporter. Mr. Isitt was' asked to express an opinion if an election was likely next year, and in reply stated: "I am not in the confidence of the Government in any way, but I fancy that it will tide over next session at all events. I can see no possible good that can result from an appeal to the country. It is possible that Mr. Massey might come back with a slightly increased majority. It is possible, on the other hand, that he might come back with a decreased majority. _ But it is impossible that either thfi Liberals or the Extreme Labour Party can come back with a party majority. Now, if tho Liberals are true to their pledge, they cannot accept office at the mercy and domination of the Extreme Labour Party in view of Mr. Holland's declaration that he would first put Mr. Massey out and the Liberals in, and if the Liberals did not do what he wanted them to do he would put them out. So that in any case no good purpose can be served by going to the country.; If Mr. Massey came back with a slightly strengthened majority things would remain as they are, and if the election resulted in his being in the minority with neither the Liberals nor the Extreme Labour Party in a position to carry on unless they combined, how shall we be any better off?"
