CHARGE OF MURDER AGAINST
JOHNSON.

MELBOURNE, This Day. Lancelot Johnson, charged with the murder of Leonard Harding, has been remanded till 2nd November, bail being refused. The police statement asserts that. Johnson was living apart from his wife; and engaged Harding to collect evidence with a view to divorce proceedings, and that the shooting followed a quarrel between the men. Johnson's advocate contended £hat Harding was mistaken for a burglar.
Johnson alleged, when first arrested, that he was iv a wine saloon when, in the early hours of the morning, he heard somebody forcing an entry. Thinking it was a burglar, he went to the kitchen, armed with a revolver. He said he lookfroin the window, and saw three men scaling a fence. As the door was burst in he fired, and then discovered that ha had shot Harding, an ex-policeman, who was a friend of his.
