IMPROVED PLANT

WANTED BY MAKARA COUNCIL

PORIRUA RIDING CONCERNED.

A loan proposal is to be placed before, the ratepayers of the Porirua Biding, the object being to procure improved plant for road maintenance. The proposal is to cover plant valued at about £2500, to include road roller £1200 to £1300, crusher £500, two motor-tractors £550, road plough £28, shed £100 to £150.

The proposal that a poll should be taken was mado at the Makara County Council meeting to-day by Councillor E. Windley, who said he thought the council would agree that it was time something was done. ■ They had been plodding along for years on the same eld system. They had a dozen men, a dozen picks, a dozen shovels, and a few stone-hammers. This was their equipment. Tliey had hesitated too long before attempting to catch up with the conditions which now ruled. The plant proposed would give much better results,- ,-yid would enable future works to be more economically effected. The chairman said it was quite obvious that the machinery would be used on the main highway, and would be a charge on tTie coanty. The actual purchase would be a charge- on the riding.

In reply to a question, he said the crusher would turn out 80 tons of metal a, day, and could be driven by one of the tractors. The council already had a grader, but had no means of traction, so it was idle.

Councillor Monaghan said he thought it would be better for Makara to go on with this scheme on its own.

The Chairman: "Yes. Later you will get a return on your payments, towards the main highways, from the Highways Board."

Councillor Monaghan: "That will be devilish little. You cannot hold that out to us."

The proposal to ask the ratepayers to endorse the loan was supported unanimously by the council.
