BECKETT OUT IN FIFTEEN SECONDS
CARPENTIER, REPEATS HIS 1919 PERFORMANCE.
(UNIISD PRESS ASSOCIATION. —COPrRIRHT.) LONDON, 2nd October.
The arena at Olympia was a remarkable spectacle for the fight between Georges Carpentier (France) and Joe Beckett (England), heavyweight champions in their respective countries. Every one of its fifteen thousand seats was occupied, breaking all record attendances ih Britain and Europe. The vast crowd rose as one man in an ovation to Beckett as he took the ring. Carpentier also received a great reception. The fight lasted fifteen seconds. It is recalled that their 1919 encounter lasted sixty-four, seconds. When tonight's affair was over with euch stupefying swiftness the occupants of the higher-priced seats philosophically reached for their overcoats and helped their womenfolk, of whom many were present, but the majority of the huge audience remained, hissed, cat-called, and howled as Beckett staggered from the ring. Critics class Beckett's as the most pitiful exhibition the British champion has ever given.
