FIRE AT CARTERTON.
(BT TELEGRAPH.—SPBCIAIi TO THB POST.)
CARTERTON, This Day. At 2 o'clock this morning the large two-storied wooden hotel, Th c Club, in Belvedere street, Carterton, together with its contents, was completely destroyed. by fire. Mr. T. J. Collerton is the licensee, and the hotel was occupied by twenty-one persons at the time, all of whom got out safely, but were unable to save anything, except a few clothes grabbed as they were making their exit. A person sleeping in a room over the kitchen was awakened by denEe smoke, and gave the alarm. Belvedere street has only a four-inch water main, and the supply being ori low pressure, the-fire brigade directed their efforts to saying the King's Theatre and the premises on the opposite side of the street. This was successfully accomplished, heat only damaging the paint. Fortunately the weather was calm. Mr. Collerton will be a heavy loser, as he had no insurance on the furniture and personal effects that he moved in with nine months ago. The building, hotel furniture, and stock were covered with insurance.
Th ß Club Hotel was erected about 23 years ago, to replace the White Hart Hotel, which also was destrowed by fire. On that occasion' the Lyceum Hall which adjoined the hotel, was also destroyed.
