ARCTIC TRAGEDY
STEFANSSON STILL HOPEFUL
MEN POSSIBLY SAFE.
■- . (Sun Cable.) . : ' (Received 4th September, 1.30 p.m.) . LONDON, 3rd September. Uaptaui Stefanssori, in an interview, stated: "I still have some hope that the reports that the men-of the Wrangel Island party.were Ifound dead, will prove to be erroneous. I cannot understand how it was possible that hunger could be^ responsible for such a tragedy. "Later information that the 6UTvivors attempted to reach' the mainland provides an- entirely new explanation. It is still intensely tragic, but .there is hope. It must be remembered that if they managed to reach Siberia, they might he compelled to traverse seven hundred miles to reach a wireless station. Besides it is quite possible that they are the guests of traders or natives." _As Wrangel Island is not a very great distance from the mainland, Captain Stefansson thinks there i s a reasonable chance of their getting there if they attempted the journey. *
