TREATMENT OF CANCER
SADIUSf AN URGENT NEED;
"The alarining increase iii 'the 1 nvttftbe* of deatns from cancer throughout the *orld: ia one; of the biggest problems of humanity," writes Mr. St'u'arfc- Wilson-. "In England more people are killed with cancer than any other disease; in fact, stafistios show that cancer claims a seventh of the total number of deaths. It is a sad fact, too, that although New Zealand is a young .country, cancer' is almost as great a scourge hefe as in older countries. Tile' appalling number of the deaths is not sufficiently realised' by the general public. It is, therefore, one Of thii mb'sS important duties of the com- 1 munity to do whatever is possible for the ctiie of cancer or for the alleviation of suffering. The least reflection on these facts should convince the public tliat a- radium institute is aff urgent need-, ot the community. Such an institute', properly equipped, would cost £36,000.. i^t. an, expenditure of £12,000 wou'.i bo sufficient nißanwhile for the relict of numerous cases which do not benefit appreciably by present methods of treatment. Dr. Valintine, Director-General of Health, and a large number of medical men in private practice have assured me personally that radium in Wellington is a crying need. of the moment, ft is obvious to anybody who gives any heed to the sad facts' that all those who are in authority should take action as.soon as possible for the establishment of a radium institute" in Welliiigldh."
