CHRISTCHURGH, This Day' A prisoner, Thomas William Ellie, whilst' being conveyed from Sivercargill to Paparua-gaol, escaped at the Ghristchurch railway station on Saturday nifjht. On Sunday afternoon, Constable Miller, of Papanui-, rang the ChristcKurch station statirtg that a' man answering the description of Ellis', had; passetf through P'ajpa'nui iri' a tasicab going north. Constables' Were' se^it out by taxi, and found Ellis at the Pier Hotel. Kaiapoi. Ellis Was! servih'g five yeilts' imp_Visorinient for foi'ge'ry. The police' consider h'e 1 must Kave' friends in' Chrisliehurch. as he Was able"; to pay for the- tail to' Kaiar/oi.
