(Received 4th August, 9 a.m.)

NEW YORK, 3rd August. Reports from Ludlow, Vermont, state that Mr. Coolidge was informed of Mr. Harding's death in a dramatic manner. Pressmen speeded by a motor to Mr. Coolidge's father's home far in the woods. The spokesman knocked at the door, and the father, in his nightdress and carrying a lamp, opened the door. The spokesman said: "We bring your son the sad news of Mr. Harding's death. Please tell him he'is President .of the United States." The father went to call his son, who in a few minutes/descended with his wife, their faces ashen grey; and then by lamplight he wrote a brief statement. TRIBUTE TO HIS DEAD CHIEF. Mr. Coolidge's statement was: " President Harding is gone, and the world has lost a great and good man. I mourn his loss. It will be my purpose to' carry out the policies which he begun for the service of the American people and for meeting their "responsibilities wherever they may arrise. J I shall ■ Seek for this purpose the co-operation of till'those who have been associated with the President during his term of office. I wish those who have given their efforts to assist him to remain in office that they may assist me. I have faith that God will direct the destinies of our nation. The preliminary oatli of office will b e administered to me by my father, who is a. notary public. I will then proceed to Washington."
