DEMPSEY DETERIORATED

LUIS FIRPO "NEAR THE CHAM-

PIONSHIP.

(Received 6th July, 9 a.m.) / VANCOUVER, sth July. Prominent sporting editors retrospectively comment unanimously that Dempsey has deteriorated since his fight with Georges Carpentier. His markmanship and timing were uncertain, and his punches weaker. There is a strong feeliug that Firpo is near the championship, since his blows are more ..vicious than those of Gibbons and his physique sturdier.

Several promoters are anxious to secure a return match between Gibbons and Dempsey, as -the former declares 'that he now knows Dempsey's style, and ; s sure that he can beat him providing wrestling tactics are barred. Yesterday's rules permitted the fighters to "rabbit" one .another .by . means of punches and striking in' the clinches, which is barred in other States.

Gibbons's showing may force the winner of the Firpo-Willard fight next Thursday to meet him prior to another championship contest with Dempsey. Meanwhile, Shelby is bemoaning the loss of at least 100,000 dollars.
