ASHBURTON, This Day. John Franklin Smith, alias C. Hertz, conjurer and mesmerist and public entertainer, was sent to gaol for three months for the theft of totalisator tickets from persons on the AshburtoH racecourse. He was convicted and discharged for being on a "racecourse, though prohibited. Hertz admitted previous convictions for indecent assault, vagrancy, and evading the amusement tax.
