MONEY FOR HOUSES
MR. MASSEY'S INTENTIONS.
(»I mSORAM.—PRESS ASSOCIATION.)
AUCKLAND, This Day. Replying to a deputation requesting that greater facilities be given to persons wishing to build houses for their own use, Mr. Massey said that the total number of houses that the Government had advanced money to build, or had built, was 12,861, and th e money found was £18,316,330. He was going to ask Parliament to make a serious alteration in the law. At present, the Government may,, under the Advances to Settlers and Advances to Workers Acts, advance 75 per cent, of the cost of building. He was going to ask Parliament to increase this to 95 per cent. That was a pretty big risk, and he did not shut' his eyes, but it must be remembered that the State advanced money on table mortgages, the liability automatically lessening with each half-yearly payment. He suggested that under- the scheme he would have to provide probably a million pounds, as there would be a rush to take advantage of it.
