TEA TRADE QUANDARY.

Tea packers are understood to bf, in a quandary as to the duty on lea, which Mr. Massey as Minister of Finance has promised to remove. It is 3d per lb. plus 2d in the case of teas grown and made outside the British Dominions. The difficulty that has arisen is that retail distributors are just buying from hand to mouth, and not in their customary quantities for fear tney will be caught with stocks carrying the duty. Consumptionj however, is well maintained, and as business, especially forward business, is extremely restricted. Stocks, too, in the warehouses are running low. The eudden removal of the duty would have the effect of a rush for supplies, and possitriy enhanced prices for the time being until imports could, catch up with normal requirements. Some big packet tea houses have notified their customers that they will refund the amount of duty remitted by the Minister on any unsold stock ol teas purchased from them from now onwards. In the meantime the packing trade is reported to be" very quiet.;
