PALMERSTON N., This Day. In the Supreme Court, an. action haß commenced, Anne E. J. Florance suing W. A. J. Hall for £1000 for alleged breach of promise of marriage. Counsel for plaintiff stated that defendant was a widower -with three children when he met plaintiff, who was separated from her husband. The latter obtained a divorce, the defendant furnishing the means to do so, and a decree absolute was made in December last. Subsequently a wedding was arranged for 23rd December, and later the defendant told plaintiff that his people had turned him down because, he proposed to marry a divorcee, and told plaintiff she would have to choose between him and the tearooms where she was working. Plaintiff' said her chil T dren could not starve, and she had .better stay at the tearooms. On 20th December defendant married a single woman.
Legal argument ensued as to the validity of a promise to marry. His Honour: "I am not going to determine now the question of the validity of a promise of marriage made to a married woman. That can be settled later."
The hearing was not concluded when the Court adjourned for lunch.
