CHARGED WITH BURGLARY
ALLEGED SAFE-BREAKING AT THAMES,-• (II TELEGRAPH.—PRESS ASSOCIATION.) ■ ■ THAMES, This Day. Bichard Henry Farrands and Thomas Joseph Leo Meagher were charged before Mr. Salmon, S.M., with burglary at the Wharepoa store,: owned by Mr. Valentine. The owner left the store on Thursday, 29th.March, and on returning on Good Friday found the windows broken and the safe removed. The safe was recovered in a quarry at Hikutaia, with both doors blown open, and £12 taken from it. Sergeant M'Donnell gave evidence as to finding the safe and arresting the accused. Farrands had voluntarily made a statement. that he drove from Waihi in a trap with his mate to Wharepoa, where they removed the safe, blew it open, and took the cash, and drove back'to Waihi. Meagher also made a signed statement of confession. Both accused, when arrested, were strongly, under the influence of liquor, and Meagher was on the verge of deliri ium tremens. .
The Magistrate committed the accused for trial, j ail was allowed on their own bonds of £200 and two sureties of £100.
