NEW YORK, 4th April.
A message from Fort Worth (Texas) states that Frederick A. Cook, of North Pole fame, has been arrested on a charge of using the mails to defraud in connection with the promotion of a large company for the sale of oil lands to the public. Seventeen other oil-promoters were arrested on similar charges.
The Federal Government alleges that there were huge promotions whereby gullible purchasers were swindled out of millions of dollars.
Cook has been released on a bond of 25,000 dollars:
[Dr. Frederick Cook claimed in 1908 to have discovered the North Pole before Peary, but his claim was rejected by scientists. Last year it was reported without confirmation that documents had been discovered in the Far North tending to substantiate his claims.]
