BENEFIT MATCHES
TO AUGMENT GYMNASIUM
FUNDS
Tha business at last night's meeting of the Management Committee of the Wellington Rugby Union was largely devoted to making arrangements in connection with the series of matches to be played between clubs for the purpose of augmenting club gymnasium funds. There were present: Messrs J. Prendeville, G. F. W. Jickson. J. N. Millard, W. J. Hurdham, S. G. Hale, H. Murphy, Father, Kane, and A. E. Neilson (representing'the Referees' Association).
Mr. A. Walling was approved as manager of a team to be sent by the Eastbourne Club J.o Masterton on Saturday uext.
. The chairman' reported that the proposal for _the playing of inter-club gymnasium benefit matches had been favourably received by the clubs, and the idea, that each club should take the proceeds of the tickets sold on its behalf had been generally approved. He expressed the opinion that the olubs should be permitted to arrange matches between themselves. . and that the union should step in only in the event of adjustments being necessary. Six clubs—Athletic, Poneke, Berhampore, Marist, Petone, and Oriental—had already made ararngements. In regard to the extension of the benefits to the junior clubs, he pointed out that flome of the smaller clubs at present possessed no eymnasiums. and would welcome an opportunity to add to their funds for the purpose. He enumerated a number of clubs so affected.
It was decided that the Johnsonville, Eastbourne. St. Patrick's College. Y.M.C.A.. Wellington College. Scots College, nnd Institute Clubs should be invited to join in the gymnasium match scheme, and that any other clubs that desired to participate should be required to make application by next meeting of the exeoutive.
Permission wm granted for a fourth grade benefit match to be pla,yed between Poneke and Athletic a« a curtain raiser to the senior match arranged for next Saturday; an application wat also approved foi" a curtain raiser between St. Patrick's College and Mkrist third erade, to be played on the owi*r ground.
The Referees' Association is to be asked to supply referees" for the matches where required.
Formal entries of teams by the Berhampore and Upper Hutt Clubs were approved and . referred to the drawing committoe. (
A financial statement presented to the meetine disclosed a credit- balance of £870 11s Bd. Accounts amounting to £128 8s 2d w?re passed for payment. The price of season ticket* was fixed at 33s for 'gentlemen and 27s 6d for ladies; preference is ,to be given to past season ticket holders. Personal applica< tion for tickets must be made to the secretary on 16th and 17th April. Past ticket-holders will receive 48 hours' preference. \
Mr. Millard and Father Kane were appointed, to represent the union at a. meetine called by the Central Progress League with the object of discussing a eroposal for a Wellington "Carnival Week."
