WELLINGTON NORTH
MR. JAMES YOUNG'S CAMPAIGN.
The Liberal-Labour candidate for Wellington North, Mr. James Young, addressed an audience of over a hundred at the Masonic Hall. Mr. J. 0. Taylor ;was chairman. The candidate spoke on lines already . reported, contrasting the Reform and Liberal policies. He considered^ the country was suffering, as it did in the late '80's, from too long a, period of conservative control, and as was the case then so now; only the advent of a Liberal Government could bring prosperity. Mr. Young condemned the / present administration of the State Rre and Accident Insurance Departments, which should, instead of building up big reserves, give the people the benefit oflower premium rates. If the Government had commandeered, produce dnring the war, local prices could have been kept down, and profits on surplus stocks sold overseas at world prices would have paid our war costs, and minimised unemployment. The Government's housing scheme had failed. Waste and extravagance had contributed largely to bring about the salary cuts which operated unfairly on the lower-paid Civil serVants. Finally the shipping ring was strangling the country's primary industries, and the solution was to be found in a State-aided line of New Zealand ships. Tho candidate, who was listened to with appreciative attention throughout, was given a hearty vote of thanks and confidence.
