WELLINGTON EAST.

COLONEL M'DONALD AND "LIES."

Colonel T. W. ,M'Donald, Independent candidate for Wellington East, had the gloves off when he spoke at Clyde Quay School last night. Pie dwelt for the most part on the assertions that he had submitted his name for the approval of the Keform Party at Patea, and had been turned down. He had telegraphed to Colonel Cox at Hawera: "My opponents are stating that I submitted my name to and was turned down by the Reform Party meeting in Hawera. As you know better, will you kindly wire the correct position." To that ho had received the following reply: "From my personal knowledge can say definitely your name never submitted to Reform meeting here by you or with your authority." _It was, therefore, a "damned, infernal lie" to say that his name had" been submitted to a Reform meeting. (Applause and laughter.) They must excuse his language, but it was the only emphatic way in which he conld characterise such statement. (Applause.) He had never denied .that he had thought of offering his servioes as Eeform candidate for Patea; but on reconsidering_the matter he decided not to do so. The extreme Labour candidate, also, had said that he offered himself as a Tory candidate. That was an extreme Labour lie. He had offered himself aa a Reform candidate, not as a Toiy. A vote of thanks and confidence was carried by acclamation.
