OPERATING COSTS OF CARGOSHIPS.
A saving of about 7500 dollars a_ month in operating costs of cargo ships is indicated by the performance of the motorBhip Califormaii, Of the American-Ha-waiian Line (says the " Christian Science Monitor "). The reduction in fuel costs over a similar vessel, driven by steam and burning oil, is 5000 dollars. On her maiden voyage from New York to San Pedro, via the Panama Canal, the Cahfornian covered 4^66 miles in sixteen days and twenty-three hours. The average fuel consumption daily was 14.3 tons, or 100.5 barrels. Hourly'speed averaged 12.2 knots. An oil burning steamship of the same size, 11,000 deadweight tons, and speed, would consume about 320 barrels of fuel oil a day. Saving in costs was not only in fa«l but in reduction in engine-room crew. On an oil burner of 11,000 deadweight tons the engine department requires 25 to 28 men, compared with 14 on a motorship. The saving in wages is estimated at 2000 dollars a month.
