NEW MECHANICAL STOKER.

Successful demonstrations have ueen • given in Glasgow of the working of an improved chain-grate stoker, which, it ia believed, will prove of great service on board ships when fitted to boilers of the marine type. A feature of the apparatus . is that without the aid or »ttentk>r : • .■ • fireman, the stoker itself brings tr . -~es from the rear of the furnace and .- posits them on the. floor in front of the^ boiler. This is done by a simple mechanical arrangement embodied in the construction > of the' chain-grate. Not only are the ashes not touched by hand, but the fireman does not require to set the mechanism in motion. The machine itself discharges the ashes at such long o* snort intervals as may be required.
