TYPOGRAPHICAL AWARD

STRONG DISSATISFACTION.

A crowded meeting of the Wellington Typographical Union was held An the Trades Hall on Saturday, when the following motions were carried :■—

_ "This meeting of members of the Wellington Typographical Union places on record its keen dissatisfaction at tfie compulsory reduction of wages assset out in the Typographical Award. The reduction has been made notwithstanding; overwhelming evidence in favour of increasr ed wages and the acknowledged prosperity of the printing trade. The award now filed makes the wages of typographers in New Zealand below what, is paid for this work in almost any part of the world. We note that the decision of the Court was not unanimous, ancl we consider the evidence and circumstances of our case were such as to warrant us to expect much fairer treatment than has been given by the Court. Further, we instruct the Board of Management to take steps to bring before other unions the suggestion that the morey trusts are using Parliament and the Arbitration Court to force down wages and lower the standard of living of worjpng people"; and "That this meeting instructs the secretary to notify the executive of the 'SSi\ Zealand Federated Typographical Association that the union is desirous of cancelling its registration under the Industrial Conciliation and Arbitration Act and registering under the Industrial Disputes Act, and asks the Federation Executive to take steps to give effect to this resolution."
