EXHIBITION OPENED
FINE DISPLAY AT CHRISTCHURCH
! (IT MM GRAPH.—MESS' ASSOCMTION.) CHRISTCHUHCH, 18th Nov. To secure the support of the general public for goods produced in their own country is the main object of the promoters of the 1922 Industrial Exhifcition, which was officially opened in lfhe ! King Edward Barracks to-day. The exhibition itself is an unprecedented event in the history of New Zealand industry. It is by far the largest exhibition of its kind ever held in the Dominion, and its success is assured not only by the great number of exhibits which have been sent in, but also by the great interest created in other centres. , Cities and towns from Auckland to the Bluff have their own particular exhibits, and besides these the various industries of all sorts and classes are exceptionally well represented. Manufacturers, producers of raw materials, and a hundred and one industrial concerns • throughout the land have contributed tg a display which covers a truly bewildering range. There are between 250 and 300 exhibitors, and all have gone to much trouble in the arrangement of their particular stands. Hundreds of stalls line the avenues, and on each of these, tastefully arranged, are samples of the results of the Dominion progressiveness. The King Edward Barracks not being large enough, there has been built in Cashel street an annexe one-tenth of a mile long, and of breadth sufficient to meet the heavy demand upon space.« The two buildings have a total floor space of 70,000 square feet. The exhibition wa,s opened' fry Lady Jellicoe, who read a telegram from the Governor-General conveying his ■warmest good wishes for the success of the exhibition. Mr. Massey telegraphed also, expressing the hope that the exhibition would be successful from both educational and financial standpoints. The Minister of Justice (Mr. Lee), speaking on behalf of the Government, said that tho progress of industries in New Zealand had been great. He had visited the industries in the main centres, qnd had been astonished at what was being produced. There now was a \ concentrated organisation on behalf of industries as a whole. ' i Sir Heaton Rhodes also spoke. The exhibition will remain open till the end of the year.. ,
